What Is Butter Slime?

Butter slime is a soft, thick slime with clay kneaded into a glue-based slime, so it spreads like softened butter instead of dripping or stretching thin. It feels matte, smooth and velvety, holds a swirl or a fingerprint, and is less sticky and less messy than glossy or clear slime, which is why it makes a good first slime.

What Does Butter Slime Feel Like?

Butter slime feels soft, smooth and slightly cool, a lot like spreading softened butter or thick buttercream icing. Press a finger in and it gives way slowly, then holds the dent. Pull it and it stretches in a thick, controlled way rather than snapping or running. The surface is matte rather than shiny, and it makes soft, quiet squishes instead of loud pops.

A few things people notice the first time they open a tub:

• It's dense. It has a pleasant weight in your hand, but it isn't tiring to knead.
• It spreads. You can smooth it flat across a clean surface and fold it back up again.
• It holds shapes. Swirls, fingerprints and folds stay put for a moment before slowly softening.

What Makes Butter Slime Different From Regular Slime?

The difference is clay. "Regular" slime — glossy or clear slime — is a glue-based slime on its own, so it's shiny, stretchy and often a little wetter. Butter slime has soft clay kneaded in, which makes it matte, thicker and spreadable, and helps it hold its shape instead of slowly flattening out.

How Long Does Butter Slime Last?

With the lid on between plays and the tub kept at room temperature, butter slime usually stays at its best for 2–4 weeks. How long it lasts depends far more on care than on the slime itself. Lids left off, warm windowsills, and play with sticky or dirty hands are what shorten its life.

Signs your butter slime is past its best:

• It has gone hard or crumbly and won't soften with kneading
• It smells unpleasant or different from when it arrived
• You can see fluff, dirt or spots growing in it

If you notice either of the last two, it's time to put it in the bin and treat yourself to a fresh tub.

Does Butter Slime Dry Out?

Yes — butter slime dries out if it's left open to the air, because the clay in it slowly loses moisture. Leave the lid off for an hour and it starts to form a firm skin. The fix is simple: close the lid firmly after every play, keep the tub out of direct sunlight and away from radiators, and never leave it in a hot car.

If it has stiffened a little:

1. Knead it for a minute or two with clean, slightly warm hands — often that's all it needs.
2. If it's still firm, add a drop or two of warm water, fold it in and knead slowly. Go little by little, because too much water makes it slippery.
3. Put it back in its tub, close the lid and let it rest for a few hours.

Is Butter Slime Sticky?

A well-made butter slime shouldn't be sticky. It can feel slightly tacky when you first open the tub, when your hands are warm, or on a hot day, but that usually passes after a minute of kneading.

If it stays sticky:

• Play with cool, clean, dry hands — hand cream, sun cream and warm palms all make slime cling
• Put it back in the sealed tub and let it rest in a cool room for a few hours
• Knead it on a clean, smooth surface rather than on fabric or carpet
• Dab a small amount of the sticky fix pen that comes with every slime on the sticky area, knead for about a minute, and repeat only if it's still sticky

Wash your hands after using the pen, and help children under 8 use it. Never use homemade activator, borax, contact lens solution or household chemicals on shop slime. If one of our slimes still isn't right, get in touch and we'll help.

Is Butter Slime Toxic?

Butter slime is a toy, not food, so it should never be eaten or put in mouths. It's made from craft materials such as glue, an activator and clay, and every maker's ingredients are different, so check the list before you buy. Wash hands before and after play, supervise younger children, and keep slime away from children who still put things in their mouths.

• Clean hands — wash them before and after play
• No mouths, eyes or hair — and keep slime away from pets
